After more than 15 years in the classroom and on college campuses, I realized something:

Instead of the joy of writing, I have the joy of research,
I’d get swept up in the many paths a single search could open. A string of well-placed words in a Boolean search would unlock a new world of information — unexpected, expansive, sometimes overwhelming. I could spend hours following footnotes, tracing ideas across disciplines, or diving into stories behind the data.
Putting it all together to answer a prompt was satisfying.
But the journey — the digging, the uncovering, the connecting —
that was the part that lit me up.
That’s when I realized: it wasn’t just the research.
It was the meaning-making. The why behind the what.
